What Color Is Whatcom County Painting Its Houses? We Checked 68 of Our Own Projects

Every week someone stands in their driveway and asks us the same question: what is everyone else choosing? Fair question. So we went through our own records and counted: 86 color selections across the last 68 projects we have documented, from Bellingham craftsmans to Blaine beach houses. Here is what Whatcom County is actually putting on its walls.

First, the honest fine print: this is our project data, not a scientific survey of the county. But it is real, local, and recent, painted between 2022 and 2026, and every project behind these numbers is published on our site with photos, so you can check our math.

The Big Finding: White Is Running Away With It

One in three color choices across all 68 projects is a white or off-white. Not one family of colors comes close.

And it is not one white. The county has quietly sorted itself into camps:

The crisp camp. Pure White SW 7005 was our single most-used color, mostly on trim, and Extra White and High Reflective White back it up. These are the whites people pick when they want the house to look sharp and just-painted for years.

The warm camp. Snowbound, Creamy, Greek Villa, Dover White, Eider White, Echelon Ecru. Softer whites with a little gray or cream in them, and the clear winners on cabinets and whole-house repaints where a bright white would glare.

If you are trying to choose between the camps, here is the pattern in our data: bright whites go on trim, warm whites go on bodies and cabinets.

The Second Finding: Black Trim Is Everywhere

The number two color in the entire dataset is SW 6258 Tricorn Black. Add Iron Ore, Cyberspace, Black Magic, Black of Night, Midnight, and the near-black teals like Dark Night, and about one in eight color choices is a black or charcoal.

Put the two findings together and you get the look that is quietly taking over the county: white or off-white body, black windows and trim, and maybe a natural wood front door. It photographs beautifully, it suits both farmhouses and newer builds, and in our overcast light the contrast keeps its definition on days when subtler schemes go flat.

Greens Are the Rising Family

About one in seven choices is a green, and the variety is wide: Evergreen Fog leads, with Sheraton Sage, Garden Sage, Dried Thyme, Foxhall Green, Lounge Green, and Retreat all showing up. That tracks with what we see at estimates: people want the house to sit into the tree line instead of fighting it, and muted green-grays do exactly that under our sky.

The Surprise: Almost Nobody Paints Their House Blue

For a county that lives on salt water, blue is nearly absent. Fewer than one choice in twelve is any kind of blue, and most of those are blue-grays like Wall Street or coastal muted tones like Whirlpool on a Birch Bay beach house.

True, saturated blue shows up in exactly one place: the front door. Calypso turquoise, Dynamic Blue, and on the warmer side Cheerful yellow, Optimistic Yellow, and tomato reds like Red Tomato and Heartthrob. The pattern is consistent: the county plays it calm on the body and has its fun at the entry. Which, for what it is worth, is also the cheapest color decision to reverse if you change your mind.

What Kitchens Are Choosing

Cabinet projects in our records are a small, clear story: warm whites win. Snowbound appears twice, Cotton once, and when it is not a white it is a muted green like Foxhall Green or Sanctuary. Nobody has asked us for a stark cool white on cabinets, and we think that is the right instinct: kitchen lighting is warm, and a cold white fights it every evening.

How to Use This Without Copying the Neighbors

The point of the data is not that you should paint your house white with black trim because everyone else is. It is the opposite: now you know what the street already looks like.

A few honest suggestions from the crew:

Test on the actual wall. Whatever you pick, brush a real sample on your siding and watch it morning, noon, and evening, and at least once under cloud. Our light shifts colors a full step. We do this with clients before every job.

Let the body be calm and the door be loud. It is the pattern in the data because it works.

If you want to stand out, green is the move. It is rising but not yet everywhere, it suits the landscape, and it will not read as a trend that dates the house.
