The Right System for Your Siding
Every siding fails differently in Sedro-Woolley weather. Pick yours β the prep, primer, and coating change with it.
Cedar & Wood Siding
Sedro-Woolley's classic β and its most demanding. Cedar moves with moisture, so the system has to breathe: oil or acrylic primer on bare wood, then two coats of 100% acrylic that flex through freeze-thaw.
What Exterior Painting Costs in Sedro-Woolley
Compact historic homes keep Sedro-Woolley budgets reasonable within the $5,000β$15,000 range, even with the careful prep their age demands. Early-1900s millworker homes carry original wood everywhere, and we prep it lead-safe rather than fast.
The estimate is free and written, with the careful hours listed plainly so you can see what a proper job takes.
Coatings Chosen for Sedro-Woolley's Weather
Foothill rain and deep old-tree shade is what kills paint around Sedro-Woolley, so it's what we spec against. That means 100% acrylic systems that breathe and flex through freeze-thaw, and elastomeric where hairline cracking calls for it.
Fog off the Skagit sits on this town through fall mornings, and the big old maples and firs keep half the siding in shade after it lifts. That combination feeds mildew, so we build the system around it: mildew-resistant topcoats, primer on any bare cedar, and no paint on a wall the meter says is wet.
Prep Is Everything on Older Cedar Siding
Most of what we paint near Sedro-Woolley is early-1900s millworker homes with original wood everywhere, and a lot of it predates 1978. That means lead-safe scraping and sanding from an EPA-certified firm, moss and mildew killed at the source, and bare wood spot-primed before color.
A millworker four-square from 1910 has original cedar under all those layers, and it is worth saving. We scrape and sand the failures back to sound edges and prime the bare wood the same day it is exposed. Rushing this stage on a house that age is how you end up doing the whole job twice.
Timing Around Whatcom County Weather
Dry siding and 50Β°F+ is the rule, which makes late spring through early fall the season in Sedro-Woolley. Daily forecast checks decide which wall gets painted when.
Painting season starts a little later here than out on the flats because the fog lingers. July through September is the reliable window, and the homeowners who called in winter own most of it.

Bug, Sedro, Woolley: A Short History of Sedro-Woolley
David Batey and three other British bachelors homesteaded here in 1878, the year the log jams were cleared downriver at Mount Vernon. Mortimer Cook, a former mayor of Santa Barbara, arrived in the mid 1880s and wanted to call his new town Bug, for the mosquitoes. His wife and the other wives objected, so he took the Spanish word for cedar, cedro, changed one letter, and got Sedro.
The Fairhaven and Southern Railroad reached town on Christmas Eve 1889, and within months two more lines crossed it a half mile north, forming a triangle where eleven trains a day eventually stopped. Philip Woolley built a lumber and shingle mill at the crossing and a company town around it, and the rival towns merged as Sedro-Woolley on December 19, 1898.
A fire on July 24, 1911 took out all but four buildings in the business district, which is why downtown is brick today. Tusko the circus elephant ran through town in 1922. Skagit Steel and the Northern State Hospital carried the economy after the mills, and today the town of 12,421 is home to the headquarters of North Cascades National Park.
Outside, decades of old paint on old wood means careful scraping and priming before color, plus mildew treatment for the river-valley damp. Gentle prep and coatings that let old wood breathe.
