Logging Camp on Old 99: A Short History of Alger
Frederick G. Abbey settled here in 1884, and Alger grew up as a logging camp on the old highway between Bellingham and the Skagit flats. It sits almost exactly halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, 76 miles from one and 66 from the other.
The camp became a working-class community along Old Highway 99, and the trees came back. Most Alger homes sit under tree cover now, on wooded acreage toward Lake Samish or tucked off the old road.
The Skagit Speedway has run Saturday-night races here for more than fifty years, a banked third-mile clay oval where Kasey Kahne raced before NASCAR. The 2020 census counted 507 people.
