The Right System for Your Siding
Every siding fails differently in Mount Vernon weather. Pick yours β the prep, primer, and coating change with it.
Cedar & Wood Siding
Mount Vernon's classic β and its most demanding. Cedar moves with moisture, so the system has to breathe: oil or acrylic primer on bare wood, then two coats of 100% acrylic that flex through freeze-thaw.
What Exterior Painting Costs in Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon spans compact hillside homes to large newer two-stories, so exterior pricing uses the full $5,000β$15,000 range. Hillside craftsman homes tend to pay for prep on original wood; east-side builds mostly pay for size.
The estimate is free, written, and itemized, so a bigger house never just means a rounder number.
Coatings Chosen for Mount Vernon's Weather
River-valley fog and open-valley summer sun is what kills paint around Mount Vernon, so it's what we spec against. That means 100% acrylic systems that breathe and flex through freeze-thaw, and elastomeric where hairline cracking calls for it.
Mount Vernon gets it from both directions: valley fog soaking the shade side through fall and winter, then open-valley sun cooking the south wall all summer. Cheap paint chalks on one side and mildews on the other. A full acrylic system stands up to both, which is why it is what we quote.
Prep Is Everything on Older Cedar Siding
Most of what we paint near Mount Vernon is hillside craftsman homes and newer east-side developments, and a lot of it predates 1978. That means lead-safe scraping and sanding from an EPA-certified firm, moss and mildew killed at the source, and bare wood spot-primed before color.
On the hillside craftsman homes above downtown, prep means respecting eighty-year-old cedar: scrape the failures, sand the edges flat, prime the bare spots before the afternoon damp arrives. The newer east-side builds are faster, mostly washing and caulk. We charge for the hours each house actually needs.
Timing Around Whatcom County Weather
Dry siding and 50Β°F+ is the rule, which makes late spring through early fall the season in Mount Vernon. Daily forecast checks decide which wall gets painted when.
Skagit fog can hold morning moisture on siding well into spring, so we run these jobs when the forecast gives us strings of dry days. Book in the off-season and you will have your pick of them.

Log Jams, Courthouses, and Tulips: A Short History of Mount Vernon
Jasper Gates and Joseph Dwelley settled the riverbank in 1870, and Harrison Clothier arrived in 1877 to teach school and open a store with his former student E.G. English. They laid out the town while it was still heavy timber and named it for George Washington's estate. A massive ancient log jam in the Skagit kept big boats out, so mail came down by canoe, and by 1881 the permanent population was 75.
Things turned in November 1884, when Mount Vernon took the county seat from La Conner. The Great Northern laid its line through town in 1891, the city incorporated on July 5, 1893, and the brick courthouse from that year still stands on Main Street. Fires in 1891, 1900, and 1903 took the original wooden downtown, the 1894 flood brought the first dike, and the interurban to Bellingham opened in 1912.
The tulips came later. Bellingham held a tulip festival from 1920 to 1930, then freezes and the Depression pushed the growers south into Skagit County, where William Roozen bought the Washington Bulb Company in 1955. Every April the valley fills with visitors, and the city of 35,219 hosts the street fair downtown.
Outside, the river valley's damp gets into everything, and shaded walls mildew early. We wash, treat, prime bare wood, and schedule around the valley's wet months.
