Why Sumas Homeowners Choose a Local Painter
From valley farmhouses to homes in town near the border crossing, Sumas homes face real Pacific Northwest weather. We paint here regularly — and plan every project around it. Our wet Pacific Northwest weather is hard on paint, so every proposal starts with prep.
Sumas sits low in the valley where damp lingers, and homes that took on water in the 2021 flood need siding checked and sealed right — not just painted over.
Sumas has plenty of homes built before 1978, where old coatings need careful, lead-safe prep. As an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm, our crews handle scraping and sanding on older siding the safe, legal way — and we schedule every exterior around real Whatcom County weather windows.

Painting Homes in Sumas
Sumas homes near the border see some of the county's hardest winters — freeze-thaw cycles that crack cheap paint and reward proper prep and premium coatings.
Sumas has rebuilt a lot in recent years, and we've been part of it — repainting repaired homes with systems that keep moisture out of walls that have already seen too much of it.
Border Town on the Flats: A Short History of Sumas
Nooksack people lived on this ground for thousands of years before Robert Johnson, the first permanent settler, arrived in 1872. The name Sumas means land without trees, or big flat opening, and it fits: the town sits on a broad floodplain that drains north to the Fraser.
Sumas City incorporated on June 18, 1891 as a railroad hub, and for a while it supplied the Mount Baker gold rush. The Sumas Roundup rodeo drew crowds in the early 1900s. Today the 24-hour port of entry at the north end of State Route 9 connects the town to Abbotsford, British Columbia, right across the line.
Water is the recurring story. Floods have been recorded since settlement, the November 1990 flood did millions in damage, and on November 15, 2021 about 85 percent of the homes in town were damaged and hundreds of people had to be rescued. Sumas has rebuilt a lot since, and we have painted a good share of it.
For a painter, Sumas is repair work first. A lot of these houses took on water in 2021, so we check siding and sheathing, seal what needs sealing, and use systems that keep moisture out of walls that have already seen too much of it. Then we paint for freeze-thaw winters, not for the brochure.
