The Town Named for Its Ferns: A Short History of Ferndale
The Lummi had a settlement on the prairie along the east bank of the Nooksack long before anyone else arrived, and the Lummi Nation still borders the city today. Early settlers called this stretch of river the lower crossing, to tell it apart from the main crossing upstream at Everson.
Billy Clark, a Texan who came north during the gold rush, was the first full-time settler, and the town dates its start to 1872. It was called Jam at first, for the log jam in the river beside it, until the first schoolteacher decided the ferns growing around the schoolhouse made a better name. Ferndale incorporated on March 19, 1907.
For most of the next century it stayed a farm and river town. That changed in the last few decades: with 15,048 people at the 2020 census it is now the third largest city in Whatcom County, and the new neighborhoods off Thornton Road are some of the fastest-growing streets we paint.
