The Right System for Your Siding
Every siding fails differently in Ferndale weather. Pick yours — the prep, primer, and coating change with it.
Cedar & Wood Siding
Ferndale's classic — and its most demanding. Cedar moves with moisture, so the system has to breathe: oil or acrylic primer on bare wood, then two coats of 100% acrylic that flex through freeze-thaw.
What Exterior Painting Costs in Ferndale
Most Ferndale exteriors land between $5,000 and $15,000. Newer builds off Thornton with sound surfaces keep budgets at the low end, while century farmhouses near the river usually earn their higher prep bill through scraping and priming weathered wood.
The estimate is free and written, itemized line by line so nothing about the price is a mystery.
Coatings Chosen for Ferndale's Weather
We've watched enough Ferndale paint jobs fail to know the culprit is almost always wind off the flats and moisture from the river meeting a product that couldn't cope. Our spec: 100% acrylic that breathes and flexes, elastomeric where walls need extra.
Done properly, siding holds 8–12 years and exposed trim 5–7. Done cheap, three years is common, and that math never favors cheap.
Prep Is Everything on Older Cedar Siding
Century farmhouses near the Nooksack and newer family builds off Thornton dominate our work around Ferndale, and many predate 1978. We scrape and sand lead-safe (we're an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm), treat moss and mildew at the source, and spot-prime bare wood before any finish coat.
Skipping that step is how Ferndale homes end up repainting twice in a decade.
Timing Around Whatcom County Weather
Painting season around Ferndale runs late spring to early fall, when surfaces dry and temperatures hold above 50°F. We check the forecast every morning and order the walls so damp siding never gets coated.
The calendar fills front-to-back, so a winter estimate is the reliable way into a summer slot.

The Town Named for Its Ferns: A Short History of Ferndale
The Lummi had a settlement on the prairie along the east bank of the Nooksack long before anyone else arrived, and the Lummi Nation still borders the city today. Early settlers called this stretch of river the lower crossing, to tell it apart from the main crossing upstream at Everson.
Billy Clark, a Texan who came north during the gold rush, was the first full-time settler, and the town dates its start to 1872. It was called Jam at first, for the log jam in the river beside it, until the first schoolteacher decided the ferns growing around the schoolhouse made a better name. Ferndale incorporated on March 19, 1907.
For most of the next century it stayed a farm and river town. That changed in the last few decades: with 15,048 people at the 2020 census it is now the third largest city in Whatcom County, and the new neighborhoods off Thornton Road are some of the fastest-growing streets we paint.
Outside, the river bottom stays damp, so the older cedar houses need moss treatment and primer on bare wood, while the newer fiber cement mostly needs caulk, cleaning, and a quality topcoat.
