The Right System for Your Siding
Every siding fails differently in Bellingham weather. Pick yours — the prep, primer, and coating change with it.
Cedar & Wood Siding
Bellingham's classic — and its most demanding. Cedar moves with moisture, so the system has to breathe: oil or acrylic primer on bare wood, then two coats of 100% acrylic that flex through freeze-thaw.
What Exterior Painting Costs in Bellingham
Most full exterior repaints in Bellingham run $5,000–$15,000. Two-story homes on South Hill, extensive cedar prep, and carpentry repairs push toward the top of that range; single-story homes with sound paint sit near the bottom. Taller South Hill two-stories and detailed craftsman trim push budgets upward, while compact Birchwood ramblers keep them modest.
Every estimate is free, written, and itemized line by line — prep, primer, product, and coats — so the number you approve is the number you pay.
Coatings Chosen for Bellingham's Weather
Marine air off Bellingham Bay and months of gray drizzle decide how coatings survive here — weak products chalk and peel years early on the most exposed walls. We spec 100% acrylic paints that breathe and flex through freeze-thaw cycles, elastomeric coatings for stucco, and penetrating stains for cedar.
Cheap paint over poor prep can fail here in as little as 3 years. Done right, expect 8–12 years on siding and 5–7 on sun-exposed trim.
Prep Is Everything on Older Cedar Siding
Craftsman-era plaster homes in Columbia and the Lettered Streets alongside newer builds in Barkley and Cordata dominate the work we do around Bellingham, and many predate 1978. We scrape and sand lead-safe (we're an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm), treat moss and mildew at the source, and spot-prime every inch of bare wood before color goes on.
Skipping that step is how Bellingham homes end up repainting twice in a decade.
Timing Around Whatcom County Weather
Exterior season here is late spring through early fall — we need dry surfaces and 50°F+ temperatures for proper curing. We watch the forecast daily and sequence walls so no coat ever goes on damp siding.
Booking your estimate in winter or early spring locks in the best summer slots.

Four Towns, One City: A Short History of Bellingham
Long before the mills, Bellingham Bay was Coast Salish country. The Lummi, Nooksack, Samish, and Nuwhaha fished the bay and hunted the forests behind it, and the Lummi Nation still sits just west of the city today.
The town story starts in 1852, when Henry Roeder and Russel Peabody built a lumber mill on Whatcom Creek. Coal turned up at Sehome two years later, and the mines under what is now downtown ran for a century, until 1955. Dan Harris platted Fairhaven in 1883, the railroads arrived in the early 1890s, and for a while four rival towns shared one waterfront: Whatcom, Sehome, Bellingham, and Fairhaven.
They finally merged on December 28, 1903, and took their name from the bay, which George Vancouver had named for Sir William Bellingham back in 1792. The teachers' college that opened as the New Whatcom Normal School grew into Western Washington University, and the brick blocks of Fairhaven and downtown are the ones the boom years left behind.
Outside, it means cedar lap siding that has been painted for a hundred years, marine air off the bay, and shaded north walls that grow mildew. Prep is most of the job on an older Bellingham house, and we price it that way.
