Semiahmoo's classic — and its most demanding. Cedar moves with moisture, so the system has to breathe: oil or acrylic primer on bare wood, then two coats of 100% acrylic that flex through freeze-thaw.

Cannery to Resort: A Short History of Semiahmoo
The spit between Drayton Harbor and Semiahmoo Bay was a Lummi village and burial ground for thousands of years; the shell middens still show along the shore. Semiahmoo is a Salish word for half moon, after the crescent of land the resort now sits on.
Prospectors set up a trading post on the spit in 1858 as a launching point for the Fraser gold fields, and someone drew up plans for a Semiahmoo City that never quite came. Fishing did. The Alaska Packers Association opened Whatcom County's first salmon cannery here in 1881 and by 1891 ran the largest in the world. Canning was the main business on the spit until 1980.
Semiahmoo Resort opened in 1987 with an Arnold Palmer golf course, closed in 2012, and reopened under new owners in 2013. In 2004 the Lummi Nation won compensation and title to two acres on the spit after a contractor disturbed the burial ground, a reminder of whose place this was first.
Outside, the spit takes wind, salt, and sun with nothing in the way. We use coatings rated for marine exposure, follow the HOA's approved colors, and schedule around the resort calendar.
