Why Fairhaven Homeowners Choose a Local Painter
Fairhaven's historic Victorians and craftsman homes deserve painters who respect the details — and know lead-safe prep inside and out. Our wet Pacific Northwest weather is hard on paint, so every proposal starts with prep.
Wet winters and damp Whatcom County air accelerate mildew and coating failure, especially on north-facing and shaded walls.
Most of Fairhaven's housing stock predates 1978, with original wood siding and trim that rewards careful, lead-safe restoration. As an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm, our crews handle scraping and sanding on older siding the safe, legal way — and we schedule every exterior around real Whatcom County weather windows.

What Our Customers Say About Us
"I can't say enough good things about Hilltop Painting! We discussed our project with a number of companies and received a crazy range of quotes, from $20k to $130k. We found out later that the least expensive option didn't include trim repair or the proper equipment to tackle our slope."
"We had a fantastic experience with Hilltop Painting. The crew was very professional, thorough, and they did an excellent job. We felt like we were in good hands every step of the way. They completely transformed the exterior of our home, and the results are beautiful."
"I am satisfied with the painting work done by Hilltop. They recently finished repainting the exterior of my home, including the doors and soffits. The crew was friendly, diligent, and experienced. I confidently recommend them to others."

Painting Homes in Fairhaven
Fairhaven's Victorian-era homes and historic district storefronts carry decades of layered paint and ornate trim — and the salt air off the bay tests every finish.
Between the historic district's ordinances, original woodwork, and the bay weather, Fairhaven rewards painters who slow down and prep right — and punishes anyone who doesn't. It's some of our favorite work anywhere in the county.
Dirty Dan's Boomtown: A Short History of Fairhaven
Dan Harris, known around the bay as Dirty Dan, arrived in 1853 or 1854 and eventually held the land claim along Padden Creek. He named the place Fairhaven, from the Lummi name see-see-lich-em, meaning safe port, and platted the town in 1883.
Nelson Bennett and Charles Larrabee formed the Fairhaven Land Company in 1890 and sold the town hard as the coming terminus of the Great Northern. The population went from about 150 in 1889 to 8,000 by the end of 1890, and Fairhaven incorporated on May 13, 1890. The railroad chose Seattle instead, but the brick blocks built in that rush still stand along Harris Avenue and 11th Street.
Fairhaven voted to join Whatcom on October 27, 1903, and the merged city of Bellingham was born that December. Salmon kept the district working long after the boom: by the 1940s Pacific American Fisheries, headquartered here, was the largest salmon canning operation in the world. The 1903 Carnegie library on 12th Street still checks out books, and the whole district is on the National Register.
For a painter, Fairhaven is the most careful work in the county. Victorian trim, plaster walls, salt air off the bay, and a historic district that cares about color. We slow down here: scrape, prime, repair, then paint, with lead-safe practices on anything from before 1978.
