The Right System for Your Siding
Every siding fails differently in Fairhaven weather. Pick yours β the prep, primer, and coating change with it.
Cedar & Wood Siding
Fairhaven's classic β and its most demanding. Cedar moves with moisture, so the system has to breathe: oil or acrylic primer on bare wood, then two coats of 100% acrylic that flex through freeze-thaw.
What Exterior Painting Costs in Fairhaven
Heritage trim detail is what moves the number in Fairhaven; full repaints run the usual $5,000β$15,000, with ornate Victorians toward the top. Hand-brushing century-old fir the right way takes hours a spray rig can't shortcut, and those hours are itemized, not hidden.
Your free written estimate names every prep task, so you know what the craftsmanship costs before you say yes.
Coatings Chosen for Fairhaven's Weather
Around Fairhaven, coatings live or die by sea air that keeps the historic district damp well into the morning. We choose 100% acrylics that flex with the seasons and stay breathable, stepping up to elastomeric coatings where the surface needs them.
The difference shows up in years: cheap-and-fast can peel by year three, while a properly specced job holds 8β12 years on siding, 5β7 on hard-hit trim.
Prep Is Everything on Older Cedar Siding
The houses tell us how to prep: 1890sβ1920s Victorians and craftsman homes with original plaster and fir trim around Fairhaven bring weathered wood, old coatings, and often pre-1978 paint. We handle it lead-safe (EPA-certified), treat the moss, and prime every inch of bare wood.
Paint over bad prep is a rental agreement with your own walls. We'd rather do it once.
Timing Around Whatcom County Weather
We paint Fairhaven exteriors late spring through early fall, because coatings cure right on dry surfaces above 50Β°F and not otherwise. Wall sequencing follows the weather day by day.
If you want a mid-summer start, the estimate that secures it usually happens by early spring.

Dirty Dan's Boomtown: A Short History of Fairhaven
Dan Harris, known around the bay as Dirty Dan, arrived in 1853 or 1854 and eventually held the land claim along Padden Creek. He named the place Fairhaven, from the Lummi name see-see-lich-em, meaning safe port, and platted the town in 1883.
Nelson Bennett and Charles Larrabee formed the Fairhaven Land Company in 1890 and sold the town hard as the coming terminus of the Great Northern. The population went from about 150 in 1889 to 8,000 by the end of 1890, and Fairhaven incorporated on May 13, 1890. The railroad chose Seattle instead, but the brick blocks built in that rush still stand along Harris Avenue and 11th Street.
Fairhaven voted to join Whatcom on October 27, 1903, and the merged city of Bellingham was born that December. Salmon kept the district working long after the boom: by the 1940s Pacific American Fisheries, headquartered here, was the largest salmon canning operation in the world. The 1903 Carnegie library on 12th Street still checks out books, and the whole district is on the National Register.
On the outside it means scraping and priming old wood, replacing the odd rotten piece of trim, and choosing a color scheme that fits the district. Salt air off the bay is hard on south and west walls, so prep is most of the price.
