The Right Product for Your Cabinets
Wall paint has no business on a cabinet door. These are the four spray systems we actually use, and which one fits depends on your kitchen and your budget.
Catalyzed Urethane Enamel
The system we reach for most. Two components mix before spraying and cross-link as they cure, which is chemistry-speak for a finish that shrugs off chips, steam, and daily scrubbing.
Refinishing vs. Replacing in Fairhaven
Painted-wood kitchens original to Fairhaven's century homes refinish for $3,000β$8,000. Replacement starts near $20,000 and usually can't match the original proportions anyway.
Refinishing keeps what makes the kitchen right for the house and renews the surface. About a week of careful work.
Shop-Sprayed Doors, Site-Finished Frames
We don't spray doors in driveways. Fronts go to the shop, hang on racks, and get coated in filtered air β the only environment where a truly flat finish is repeatable.
The frames get masked and sprayed where they stand. Reassembled, the kitchen reads as one factory-finished piece β no brush marks anywhere, no seams in the sheen.
A Finish That Survives Real Cooking
Daily wear is the test that matters. The systems we spray keep curing for weeks after application and end up hard enough that a scouring pad won't leave its mark.
Fresh enamel is firm in days and fully cured in a few weeks. Respect that window and the finish repays it for years β our care card spells out the little that maintenance requires.
Picking a Color You Won't Regret
Choosing cabinet color in Fairhaven means reckoning with sea air that keeps the historic district damp well into the morning. We brush samples onto your actual doors so the shortlist competes in the light it will live in.
Color trends come and go, but warm whites and grounded blues and greens keep winning in Northwest kitchens. Satin sheen, sample doors first, no guessing.

What Our Customers Say
"Hilltop Painting provided expert ideas about our kitchen cabinet restoration and paint colors! They also painted our interior walls and baseboards. The team worked hard and efficiently. It was really nice that they asked us several times if we were satisfied with their work."
"I just want to say that this experience was wonderful. β¦ I love the look of my new cabinets painted at my Bellingham house. Thank you so much for helping me out!"
"Hilltop painting did an amazing job on my very large(whole wall) bookcase. It was a huge endeavor with many shelves and drawers and with many sandings, primer coats and top coats. I am very happy with this job. Daniel was prompt to respond to my requests and questions and very good about communication every day."

Dirty Dan's Boomtown: A Short History of Fairhaven
Dan Harris, known around the bay as Dirty Dan, arrived in 1853 or 1854 and eventually held the land claim along Padden Creek. He named the place Fairhaven, from the Lummi name see-see-lich-em, meaning safe port, and platted the town in 1883.
Nelson Bennett and Charles Larrabee formed the Fairhaven Land Company in 1890 and sold the town hard as the coming terminus of the Great Northern. The population went from about 150 in 1889 to 8,000 by the end of 1890, and Fairhaven incorporated on May 13, 1890. The railroad chose Seattle instead, but the brick blocks built in that rush still stand along Harris Avenue and 11th Street.
Fairhaven voted to join Whatcom on October 27, 1903, and the merged city of Bellingham was born that December. Salmon kept the district working long after the boom: by the 1940s Pacific American Fisheries, headquartered here, was the largest salmon canning operation in the world. The 1903 Carnegie library on 12th Street still checks out books, and the whole district is on the National Register.
The kitchens run from painted original built-ins to 1980s and 90s remodels. Both can be painted well, and both need the doors sprayed off-site for a factory finish.
